COMMUNITY EVENTS
Broward County Library Summer 2010 (Broward County)
FLIPANY has partnered with the Broward County Library system in providing a series of Nutrition workshops to adolescents between the ages of 11-18.
The workshops are conducted in two groups:

Tweens Two Queens: Many young girls are bombarded with maintaining the ‘perfect’ body image all in the name of being sexy, so in our “Nutrition is Sexy” workshop, we have incorporated healthy ways in which the girls can maintain the body that is perfect for them while still being fit and healthy.  We provide an average of 20 girls with information on how to read and understand the MyPyramid, Food Labels, how to make healthy snacks and how to achieve a lifestyle of physical activity.

Boys 2 Men:  Young men are taught how to choose foods that will increase physical performance in the area of sports but also increase brain activity.  They are also introduced to a mini bootcamp where our class facilitators get them involved by doing actual exercises that will build muscles, strength and flexibility.

United Healthcare Summer 2010 (Miami-Dade County)
FLIPANY and United Healthcare have teamed up to provide nutrition workshops to groups of senior citizens throughout the Miami-Dade area.  In these highly interactive classes, we focus on teaching seniors how to make healthy food choices (using the MyPyramid specifically designed for older adults by Tufts University), the importance of staying hydrated and ways to incorporate physical activity into their daily lifestyle.  While we go into each class with a lesson skeleton, we encourage and allow participants to ask questions and lead the discussion based on their concerns.  We have found that this method leads to greater audience participation and greater retention of information.
